My name is Jake, my wife Kate and I have been married for 10 years. Yes Jake and Kate, it has a nice ring to it doesn't it? It was about a year ago that we inherited our farm in the Carolina's from my grandpa Jim. He died at a very young age of 93. My grandpa Jim Theodore Campbell was truly an inspiration to us all. The old piece of property with its old house and barn, sits in the foothills of the Carolina's. I feel very fortunate to have this old country house full of waving country hills in our back yard, as well as looking out from the front porch. To be quite truthful, grandpa Jim never had much, just the farm which has been passed down from each generation. And now, it is all mine and Kate's. The Campbell legacies as it were. That barn seemed as if Grandpa was always in there. Grandpa always talked about it because it was his favorite spot on the farm. It was old, had wooden planks, and would have a finish coat of red paint every 10 years. The barn, I am told, has been there since the 1800's and built by the community. It even stood tall through the Civil War and the Great Depression. Never could I figure out WHY my grandpa would spend so much time in the barn. It was as if it were a great secret, some kind of secret that he was holding back from us for some unknown reason! I always thought it was a cool place to be adventurous as a young child. Now as adult it intrigues me. I soon was to find out what drew my grandpa to the barn and why, when my wife unexpectedly stumbled onto something that changed our lives. We appreciate the local photograph taken by Gerald Yokely “Jake...come quick! You won't believe what I've found! “ View our magazine online at ww.foothillstimes.com Enjoy more interesting things about your town on our new website. 67 Fall 2014, Volume 7, No.36
