Walnut Cove Public Library Tin Roof Continued from page 37 (continued from page 30) While you lay 'neath your quilt with a smile on your face. Nearby in her rocker Mama knitted and rocked, Making her children, scarves, gloves and socks. When winter storms came, snow would cover the trees, Walnut Cove Public Library opened on November 3, 1970, in a small store front on Main Street. Discussion and planning began in 1975 for a much larger free standing building just a few blocks north of the old library. Construction began in 1978, giving the library 4,692 square feet of space. As the town grew, the library needed more space and on December 8, 2005, a ground breaking ceremony was held for the expansion of the Library. On October 29, 2009, the Walnut Cove Public Library held their Open House and invited everyone into their new 8,032 square foot building. The beautiful design and layout is a significant addition to the community. The library is staffed by two full-time and two part-time employees. They serve, on average, 150-200 people daily. The staff is friendly, out-going, simply delightful to be around, and always willing to help. “I love seeing the reactions of people who have not visited the library in a while. They come in, see all the improvements and start remarking on how fabulous it is and ask when we made all these changes.” says Christine. The Walnut Cove Public Library is a very important part of community outreach. They offer summer reading programs for all ages, actively participate in outreach programs in the local elementary schools and try to refer people to our local aid organizations such as East Stokes Outreach Ministry and Goodwill Industries. Christine and the staff firmly believe the library’s main focus is to promote and educate not only the Walnut Cove community, but all citizens about what a wonderful place Walnut Cove really can be. “Helping people to better themselves, encouraging a love of reading, and watching people make positive changes in their lives are some of the most rewarding aspects of my job.” Christine comments, “It doesn't end there. Helping young children pick out books on their reading level at the beginning of a school year and then seeing the improvements a child makes throughout the school year always makes me smile. I love helping people pick out a great book and escape their everyday life challenges, if only for a few moments, by entering a whole new world or adventure. That is the power books have for us.” The library is very active in the community by hosting bake sales, festivals, book signings for new authors, providing meeting rooms for a variety of groups throughout Stokes County and so much more. “We are currently working towards adding a computer lab to help with setting up computer literacy programs and the possibility of becoming a VITA tax preparations site in the very near future.” adds Christine, “We are always looking for ways to better our services for our patrons and community.” To sum it up, “The Library provides an opportunity for every individual to develop their creative and spiritual capacities as well as making use of their leisure time by promoting personal and social well-being, and contributing to the growth of knowledge.” Check out your local public library today and see for yourself what an enchanting place it is.
