O
n a Friday night in March, by request I
peeled myself out of reclusion and into a
local coffee shop to visit a friend who was
working. The place was empty except for a
handful of people crowded in the back in chairs
that were set up audience style. A kid no older than
16 awkwardly sat in front of them with his guitar,
only to tune it for what seemed like too long. What
caught my attention was how brilliant he sounded
Bryn Hermansen
once he got his nerves settled and fingers
appropriately strumming. "Too bad only his family showed up," my friend
said to me after shutting off the blender, "he's pretty good." I wondered
how many times a day musicians play a show that nobody's lucky enough
to catch because they either don't know about it or they're too brainwashed
watching competition shows from the comfort of their own couch. I went
home that night with the same thoughts swirling and a spark under me to
do something about it. A few internet searches later, I came to the
conclusion I would start an online radio show/podcast called The Bryn
Show dedicated solely to any unknown musicians brave enough to
publicly bare their soul.
It's now been two years since then and the show's growing now more
than ever. What started as just playing a few acts around King has now
spread worldwide. I've been catching a lot of bands, local and touring, at
venues that have been buzzing with new talent every week, making it
impossibly easy to get out there and support our local music scene. In fact,
mention this article at the Garage on W 7th St in Winston-Salem and get $1
off admission and maybe I'll even see you at a show. Otherwise, tune in
every Sunday night at 9:30pm for a half hour of either various track lists I
pick live or a pre-recorded live performance. Any bands, please feel free to
contact me through facebook, twitter or e-mail because I am always
looking for new material. From the bottom of my crazy heart, thanks for
all of your support.
The Girlfriends
There have been countless up and coming bands storming the music scene in WinstonSalem so far in 2014, but none quite like The Girlfriends. They're known for putting on
the most exciting shows around. I recommend finding them on facebook and seeing
when you can catch them live. Here's what they had to say about themselves:
Q- Who are The Girlfriends?
SA: We are Elijah Sams, Sophia Arias, Alex Bond and Dustin Dean. We like to read each
other's mind to create what we like to call New Wave Punk Rock.
DD: We're a 4 piece that does whatever we want. AB: Rip-roarin', panty-droppin' rock
and roll. ES: Amateurs.
Q- How did you all meet?
May 3 Twin City Buskers (Blues)
May 10 The Goodtimes Bar-b-cue Bluegrass Band:
featuring Roger Martin (Bluegrass)
May 17 Wyndy Trail Travelers (Blue/Newgrass)
May 24 None of The Above (Bluegrass)
May 31 Abe Reid & The Spike Drivers (Blues & Boogie)
DD: I encountered Elijah back in 2010 when he drummed for Dylan Vee. I thought "this
man is going to be my drummer one day,". But ironically, I ended up becoming his
drummer. I met Alex in 2011 at a Krankie's Shuffle competition when he was playing for
his old band which I thought was really neat. But I was too stupid and shy to talk to him
because he looked like Robert Plant. I met Sophia at a dive bar here in Winston last year. I
mentioned the band and she asked if she could play guitar in it and I said "okay.”
ES: We all had the same drummer.
Q- What can people expect at your show and why should they come?
ES: Expect at your own risk. It'll probably be free. If not, we'll give you something!
DD: Expect us to get blacklisted, if anything. And they should come for that reason. It
means we'll give them an experience they won't forget for awhile.
Q- Any last comments?
25 E 52 Bypass, Pilot Mountain, NC (336) 368-0008
AB: Anybody can do what we do, so they should do it.
DD: "I did it my way." ES: I love you, Bryn.
SA: We're The Girlfriends and we love you. But stay out of our way when we're in the
zone.
