Buckie Thistle
FOOTBALL CLUB
After winning their league last season Buckie Thistle FC has been working hard
during the off-season to make sure that they are well prepared for another successful
campaign. Football Focus Magazine recently caught up with their Secretary David Pirie
to find out more about the club.
Involvement Atmosphere Last Season
He told us, “Buckie Thistle is my
local club and prior to being appointed
Secretary I had played for the club for
a few years whilst still at school and
university. I have also been involved
with youth training and prior to my
appointment supported the club home
and away, travelling to matches with my
Dad and my son.
The most challenging aspect of
the role is the fact that I work full time
and have to deal with a daily barrage
of emails. Over and above that it is
attending meetings and then trying
to get the minutes issued as soon as
possible thereafter and that hasn’t
even mentioned match day duties. The
reward as always is seeing the team
perform well on the park.” “The general mood at the club at
the moment is one of expectation allied
to bit of fatigue. As defending League
champions we do not know how other
teams will react to playing us but we
fully expect them to be trying even
harder to beat us. “Last season went fantastically well
for the club. We were aiming for a top
six finish having finished seventh the
year before but ended up winning the
league after a nail biting finish which
culminated on the last day of the season.
We also hoped for a good run in one of
the cups. This hope was fulfilled in the
shape of the Aberdeenshire Cup which
we won after extra time and penalties
when we were down to nine men – an
unbelievable team performance.
This season began with four games
against Scottish league opposition;
three full time teams - Dundee,
Dundee United & Raith Rovers plus
Cowdenbeath. Unfortunately we did
not pick up any points however a 2-0
defeat away to Premier League team,
We had an extended campaign due
to the league playoffs and they weren’t
long finished when we were back into
the Scottish League Cup on the 15th July
which was proceeded by three friendly
matches but that was the reward for
winning the league which we fully
accept.”
