Enfield Town Enfield Town FOOTBALL CLUB Enfield Town are, proudly, the first ever supporter-owned football club in the United Kingdom. Formed on 23rd June 2001, following the much-documented slow demise of the old Enfield FC, the club started its life in the Essex Senior League, and finished runners-up in that first season before winning the league championship the following year. Their time spent in the ESL was very successful, with two championships, two league cups, a Middlesex Charity Cup and wins in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy and Capital Counties Feeder Leagues Trophy finals. Following promotion to the Southern League (East) in 2005, Town had a good first season at that level, finishing third before losing to Wivenhoe Town in a promotion play- off. Following a sideways move into the Ryman League Division One (North) for 2006-07, the club again finished third; this time losing out via the play-offs to AFC Sudbury. In 2009-10, the club yet again only just missed out on promotion, being beaten this time by Concord Rangers in the play-off final. The club played at Brimsdown Rovers’ ground in a ground- share arrangement for a number of years, but in October 2008 Enfield Council announced a deal with the club allowing it to relocate to the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium in Donkey Lane, Enfield. The club worked closely with the Council to see this old athletics stadium restored and upgraded. Town finally had a home of its own, a decade or so on from its formation, and a short distance from the former Enfield FC stadium in Southbury Road. The stadium retains athletics facilities, including a running track, but the club has been able to provide an atmospheric environment, with spectators at either end being very close to the pitch. The refurbished stadium was formally opened in November 2011, and promotion to the Premier Division of the Ryman League followed in May 2012 when Town beat Needham Market 1-0 in the play-off final. In 2013, the club achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club status and were Middlesex FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year in 2014. June 2014 also saw the launch of a Community Share scheme, with the backing of Supporters Direct (who had been very helpful at the time of the club’s formation), in order to help the club progress further both on and off the field. There has clearly been some terrific work carried out at the club since it was first established and they are a fine example of what a well-run club can achieve. Hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come.
