FOOTBALL CLUB

Shawbury United FC is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year having started out playing on a village pitch in 1992 . The club has made tremendous progress since then and will be competing in the Midland Football Premier Division in the 2017 / 18 season .
It will be their second season in this division after they gained promotion by winning the West Midlands Regional League in 2016 . Last season the club enjoyed some success in the cup competitions , reaching the final of the Shropshire Premier Cup and also winning the Powell Cup .
For the new season they have made the move to the Ludlow Football Stadium on Broomfield Road and will be managed by Dave Richards and assistants Stu Lewis and Dave Cooper . Off the field they are led by Chairman Chris Kirkup who is supported by Secretary Dai Martin .
Last season it would be fair to say that their first team did not perhaps enjoy the league campaign that they would have liked as they compiled a record of fourteen wins , five draws and twenty three defeats from their forty two matches . This saw them finish near the bottom of the league with 47 points .
The major positive for the team was that they avoided relegation in thrilling fashion on the final day . The club has been working hard during the off-season to make sure that they can improve this time around and with a year ’ s experience in the league they should be in with a good chance of pushing on up the table .
One of the highlights of the team ’ s performances was the attacking brand of football that they were able to produce . This was reflected by the fact that they found the back of the net sixty nine times , outscoring many of the sides around them .
This will certainly have meant that any supporters attending their matches will have been well entertained and should encourage more of the local community to get behind the side in the future . This in turn has the potential to provide them with a valuable source of additional revenue which is particularly important in the current financial climate .
Whilst Shawbury ’ s overall form was disappointing , their home record was actually quite strong as they won eleven of their twenty two matches , accumulating thirty five points in the process . Their fine home form should provide the team with a solid platform from which to build as they look ahead to their 2017 / 18 campaign and there should be no reason why they can ’ t at least replicate it . If they can then pick up a few more results on the road then they should be able to challenge for a mid-table finish at the very least .
While Shawbury United struggled in the league last year , they have made tremendous progress in recent times and should be proud of what they ’ ve achieved in the last twenty five years . If they continue in the same manner then they should be able to look forward to a bright and successful future for many years to come .
