Ashton Town
Association FOOTBALL CLUB
A
shton Town AFC has endured a difficult campaign at first team
level this time around but still retains a strong group of volunteers
working hard to ensure that the club has bright future. Football Focus
Magazine recently spoke with their Secretary Stefan Ochwat.
Involvement
He told us, “I have been involved
with Ashton Town for 13 years, initially
as assistant coach with the under 18s team
and latterly as club secretary. The club
had a link with a junior club called Wigan
Junior Latics, this was the junior supporter
section of Wigan Athletic Supporters club.
My son had played in this Wigan
36 Issue 71
Junior Latics team from under 10s to
under 16s, the supporters junior club
finished at the under 16s age group and so
Ashton Town used this link as their yearly
feed into their under 18s team who played
in the North West Youth Alliance league
and still do to this day.
After a number of years my son moved
onto pastures new but I stayed involved
with Ashton Town as initially, like a lot
of dads, you get involved with football
to support your son or daughter and
afterwards when they move on or finish
you still have an interest for yourself and
this is what I found.”
The Role
“The most challenging aspects are
trying to keep a club alive at grass roots
