C
efn Druids AFC has been progressing well in recent
times and they have continued that trend this
season. Football Focus Magazine recently caught up with
their Director of Football, John Hughes to find out more
about the good work that they’ve been doing lately.
Involvement
He told us, “I worked for Fulham as
a Senior Scout for fifteen years. It was a
fantastic experience working with some
very good people. The Euro experience
was amazing. I retired two years ago but
could not stay away from the game and
contacted my local semi pro club Cefn
Druids (co-incidentally the oldest club in
Wales, actually in the world apart from
England ... Sheffield FC) to see if I could
help. I knew one of the Directors there
and I made the first move. I am now
the League have massive financial inputs
from companies or individuals.
We survive on the volunteers to raise
money, and more recently income from
the new 3G pitch. It is rewarding to see
the first team progressing without the
financial backing of major sponsors and
it is good to see our Academy producing
talent here in NE Wales.”

The Role
“The most challenging aspect of the
job is undoubtedly the financial issues
affecting not just the first team budget
but also the running of the club on a daily
basis. The manager, Huw Griffiths, has
the lowest budget in the Welsh Premier
League .We do not have any major
benefactors .A great deal of the teams in
