Hawick Waverley
At the time of Brian’s illness, one of his grandsons was playing
at semi-professional level but wanted to return to the club to
play for his papa’s team alongside Brian’s other two grandsons
and also the manager Mick, who is Brian’s son. Two other former
players returned from a higher level too and boosted the squad.
Unfortunately, Brian passed away on the 17th December and is a
massive miss to everyone involved at the club.
Results have taken a massive turn around and at time of
writing, the team have won twelve games in a row, are sitting
in a comfortable third in the league and have a cup 1/4 final and
two semi finals to look forward to. It would be a lovely touch if
the team could possibly lift a cup this season in memory of Brian.
The situation with Brian seems to have brought everyone at
the club together and team spirit is as good as I have seen it in
over twenty years at the club.
We are now getting towards the last few months of the season
and although a league win is a long shot, there seems to be a real
determination in the squad to keep the winning mentality and
second place is a realistic target.
The cups are the clubs best chance of lifting any silverware,
and it would be great to reach a final. The club are in the semi
final of the South of Scotland Amateur Cup which is the ‘biggest’
cup we compete in and it is an achievement in itself to reach this
stage. We face Avendale AFC in the last four and it would be
great to progress to the final in this cup, which Hawick Waverley
won in season 2005/06.
As for our plans for the club, we are just getting back to some
sort of normality after Brian passing away. We continue to build
and promote the club and make it an attractive option for the
best players in the area to play for. We are also planning our end
of season dinner and presentation night and we have lined up
Chris Sutton to be a guest speaker on the night which is fantastic.
Our facility is a council owned building which we rent for a
nominal fee, currently on a 25 year lease. We do all the upkeep
of the building and did extend the facility about nine years ago
to gain more space in the home changing room area. The way
things are in the area surrounding the changing rooms, I don’t
think there is any scope for any more alterations although we are
more than happy with our facilities.
Our hopes for the next five years are to continue pushing
the club forward and promote it in the correct way. The club
is Brian’s legacy and its only right that we do all we can in his
memory to run the club as he would have wanted.
