Chertsey Town FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/FOOTYFOCUSMAG Chertsey Town FOOTBALL CLUB Chertsey Town FC was officially established in 1890 and they started out competing in the West Surrey League. Their first success came in 1897 when they won the Surrey Junior Cup. The club is affectionately known by supporters as the ‘Curfews’. A name which comes from a locally famous bell that hangs in the nearby St. Peters Church. Football Focus Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative John Waghorn to find out more about how they are getting along at present. This Season He told us, “If I’m to be honest I’m a little disappointed with the position of the first team as I have been for the previous two seasons since we were relegated from the Southern League. It feels like we have been flirting with relegation for three seasons and constantly looking over our shoulders rather than looking up the table. I guess it’s a question of changing the team’s mentality as it’s easy to get into the losing habit and it almost becomes an expectation. We have a young and talented squad of players that need to know what it’s like to be successful and enjoy it which I feel that the current manager is 28 Issue 70 slowly instilling into them. We are now looking to continue to stabilize our league position with a view to finishing as high in the table as possible.” U18s “Our under 18’s team, playing in the Ryman Central division, are very much a “work in progress” as this is virtually a new side from last season due to a majority of the lads becoming over age. Many of the current lads are first years so I have high hopes for them next season rather than this. Connor Cullen the leading scorer in the youth team last season is now a first team regular and James Cartwright is also part of the squad.” Community “I would like to think that we are striving to be a community club; we have over the last few seasons been building stronger bonds with our junior section which has seen several lads from the under 16s train and play in the U18s. It’s important that these lads know that as a local club it’s important to showcase local talent thus strengthening the junior section in the long term.” Facilities “Our clubhouse was built in the 1970s and could do with an upgrade as some parts are looking the worse for wear.
