ith a decision expected on their planning application for a new stadium , a place in the quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy and involvement in the push for promotion from Sky Bet League Two , 2017 promises to be a ground-breaking year for Luton Town .
Under the management of former player Nathan Jones , the Hatters have been ever-presents in the top seven of the EFL ’ s bottom tier this term , save for one week in early January when FA Cup involvement and results elsewhere saw them drop to eighth .
Welshman Jones , who celebrated a year in charge on January 6 , has often spoken of his intention to eventually lead Luton back to the Championship , a division he left as first-team coach at Brighton & Hove Albion .
Getting out of the EFL ’ s basement in their third season since winning promotion from their five-year spell in
Non-League is first on the agenda though , and by mid-January Jones ’ team were well up on the position in which he inherited them .
At that stage of the 2015-16 season , Luton – having parted company with Conference-winning manager John Still – were 13th on 29 points from 25 games .
A 2-1 come-frombehind win at Crewe on 14th January , despite playing most of the second half with ten men , took Jones ’ men back into the play-off places on 41 points from the same number of games of the current campaign .
“ That ’ s an immense win and I ’ m so proud of the players ,” said Jones after celebrating with his team in a huddle in front of 995 travelling supporters after that victory at Gresty Road . “ I got them together because it can be a real key point of the season .
