ownham Town FC is an FA Community Charter Club that plays a vital role in their local area providing people with a chance to enjoy the game . We recently caught up with Club Representative George Dickson to find out more about the good work they have been doing lately .
Involvement
He started by telling us about his involvement , saying , “ I have been involved with Downham Town since moving to Norfolk in 1993 when my eldest son , then 6 years old started to play . Downham Town were my local club and had a good reputation within youth football .
I started coaching teams in 1994 and took both my sons all the way through the youth set up to Under 18s and then into the first team . I was secretary of the youth set up from 1996 till 2007 then the adult and youth sections joined together and I took the secretary role for the whole club .”
The Role
“ The most challenging parts of my role have been getting finance to keep the club going and a lack of interest in people wanting to get involved in the club . We have a small committee of people who have been involved for a long time and like many clubs struggle to find volunteers . The most rewarding thing is seeing players who have been with the club since the age of six or seven coming all the way through to the adult set up .”
Atmosphere
“ The mood here is positive ; we have for a number of years struggled as we have local rivals who have more financial clout and they constantly took our best players as they had either the finances to pay players or played a level higher . We now have a squad of relatively young players who are local to Downham with many of them coming through our youth system .”
This Season
“ Our league position is better than expected as a lot of our opponents are paying money . The league is very tight from 4th to 10th so it changes almost weekly . We brought in a new management
