Sherwood Colliery to promote the need for respect across all forms of football but more so the youth setup .
Many good players stop playing the game due to overzealous coaches ( Sunday morning Mourinhos ) that put too much pressure on them from the start or the parents pushing them thinking their lad is the next Messi and starts interfering with managers tactics and decisions . Let them get on with playing , let them enjoy the game we all love and they will thank you for it in the end .
In Portugal the coaches don ’ t shout or talk during youth games , they just watch and listen because they let the players make mistakes . Eventually they will learn from them and be better players for it instead of being shouted at and berated from the sidelines .”
Integration
“ We have the U21 team they would play in on a Tuesday night and then the reserves on a Saturday with the view to pushing them through to the 1st team when ready . We have had some success this year from the U21s with players already representing the reserves and five moving up to the 1st team squad on a weekly basis so the opportunity is there for any player to move up and play at a higher level .
There is no pressure put on them , they can request to drop down from 1st to reserves if they feel out of their depth or just play U21 until they feel ready but our managers and coaches speak to players and assess them at every opportunity and if that player is playing well enough they will be called up to the 1st team .”
Community travel costs to the teams in the division are a potential challenge . I have seen teams refuse promotion because the costs involved would effectively send the club out of business . As you move through the steps in the football pyramid you then have to factor in players expenses or wages which can be a black hole . We have played and nearly beaten teams this season in cup competitions where their weekly salary / costs for players are around £ 7000 with some players paid £ 400-1000 a week at clubs in step 5 / 6 . These things all need to be taken into consideration going forward .
The other is ground improvements if needed to reach FA requirements as these can ’ t hold you back from promotion in leagues . Football is a wonderful game to be part of and the nonleague side is more enjoyable than the higher divisions now in my opinion but it always comes down to one thing and it ’ s money that ’ s what keeps the clubs in business and what keeps the non-league teams ticking over and staying in the black . These are challenges both Sherwood and our local rivals will all have but as a club it is our job to plan for it and put plans in motion to avoid any disappointment .”
Ambitions
“ As I have only been here six months , five years seems a long way off but as a club the ambition is always to finish as high as possible and gain promotion from the Central Midlands League South Division so promotion is definitely an ambition whether it is this season or not we won ’ t find out till May but as a club we want to move every team in the right direction , striving for success outside of the football side of it . I think the club would like to see some ground development and there are plans in place to do this so at present it is a case of watch this space .”
“ Without a doubt Sherwood Colliery and Debdale Park are at the heart of the community both sporting and socially . Our plans and visions for the future will only emphasise this more . With the view to bringing in a female team and the youth set up under the club rather than just the Sherwood banner this gives more opportunity to develop players and bring them through the age levels into the first team or onto the professional game .”
Challenges
“ Promotion and the financial needs for that are always a challenge . The club is non-profit so promotion and potential www . footballfocus . biz 43
