The loudest dissenting voices are
aiming their collective ire at Walters
though, with the chairman coming under
increasing pressure to sell his majority
stake to a consortium of supporters that
have long since harboured ambitions to
run things in a more collective fashion. As
noble a principle as this might be, whether
or not boardroom instability would serve
United well right now has become a
matter for increasingly divisive and bitter
debate, not exactly in keeping with the
spirit of the would-be new owners’ aims.
It is fair to say that Walters has never
sought or found universal popularity
since buying out previous chairman Mick
Maplesden, who had been the second
consecutive National Lottery winner
to control United’s affairs. Both soon
realised that money brings no guarantee
of success, a lesson that is now being
repeated once again. Lacking the personal
wealth of his two predecessors, Walters
has worked tirelessly to ensure the club
has operated within its means during
much of his tenure, with a heightened
focus on commercial revenue, but it
would certainly be unfair to accuse him
of failing to back his managers from a
playing budget point of view since those
FA Cup heroics.
Rightly or wrongly, Walters has
become the convenient scapegoat for
the U’s current plight, yet whoever, or
whatever, is truly to blame, time is fast
running out for a viable solution to be
identified. Relegation battles may be the
norm in 1066 Country, but it was never
meant to be like this.
