The use of house plants in
various corners of each room
offers the illusion of life
and breathability.
FUNCTIONALITY
If something isn’t functional, it doesn’t matter how
pretty it is, we won’t use it the way we should. When
it comes to a vacation property, the layout and addi-
tion of furniture should be precise. Don’t purchase
big, bulky pieces that overcrowd a small space. In-
stead, opt for smaller, multi-functional furniture
pieces, like ottomans that double as footrests and
storage. A compact desk is nice to offer guests as
well, being that they may bring a laptop along with
them, etc.
Flooring should be easy to clean and extra linens
should be provided. Check your property annually
for any malfunctions in appliances, or otherwise. You
should be able to walk around the space comfort-
ably, without bumping into things. Making each space
functional is more important than making it look
good, but by doing your best at both, you will have
provided the best experience for your guests.
If you’re staying there yourself, you will want to accom-
modate your own needs, such as how you like your
own home’s layout. You don’t need to completely repli-
cate what you have back home, but there should be
some sort of correlation to show that your vacation
property is just as comfortable for you as your off-sea-
son house. Stock closets with extra pillows and always
have extra toiletries on hand for emergencies. A func-
tional space makes for a happy guest.
Whether you are looking to spruce up your own per-
sonal vacation property, or you are hoping to be
booked all season long, these inexpensive and practi-
cal suggestions will get you well on your way. For less
than what a single vacation day would cost, you can
have your property looking like new; ready for the trav-
eler's market, or ready for your own family to enjoy!
Make your home away from home truly inviting, and
you will never want your vacation to end.
