Food Quality Magazine ISSUE 01 | SUMMER 2014 From our Bookshelf Food Safety - a Global View BRC, 2013 BRC, as the standard owner, processes every year large amounts of data in their database of all the audits carried out. In 2012, more than 16,000 audits of food producers have been performed according to BRC Global Standard for Food Safety in 113 different countries. In 2013, BRC decided to analyse such data and used them in this publication.   Information is analysed according to individual regions and countries. Most frequent non conformities are identified. TOP 10 non-conformities for all audits performed in 2012 were issued to the following requirements: 2. HACCP 4.4 Building fabric 4.13 Pest control 4.11 Housekeeping and hygiene 1. Senior management commitment 4.7 Maintenance 4.8 Staff facilities 3.4 Internal audits 4.9.3 Glass, brittle plastic, ceramics and similar material 3.9 Traceability The publication is available as pdf e-book for free download at BRC website. Forensic Enforcement: The Role of the Public Analyst Glenn Taylor, RSC Publishing, 2010 I bought this book after I had a chance to listen to Glenn`s excellent speech on food fraud topic at IAFP European Symposium in Budapest this May. The book was published in 2010, well before the recent horse meat, rat meat and other food fraud issues came in light of public concerns, but is still very actual and helpful. It described in the light read form, history of adulteration since 250 BC till present and showed examples of ways public analysts work. The book describes how public analysts work in the United Kingdom for last 150 years, but certainly it will be useful and interesting reading for readers from any other country outside U.K or Europe. For food businesses, the book represents an interesting reading with a number of practical examples on what happened in the past in the area of food adulteration and what we are, at present, able to detect to avoid food fraud issues or to try to minimize them as much as possible. Definitely a must read book for all interested in the topic of food fraud. 28
