Vicky Swann & Johnny Dyer were guests at ® Totnes Folk Club recently and proved, as if proof was needed, that they are musicians and singers of the highest calibre. The following evening my club in ® Teignmouth, celebrated its 10th birthday, and a new venue, The Oystercatcher’s Café. What a night! Packed to the rafters, 10 or was it 11 floor spots, and a cracking performance from our guests Marc Woodward & Robin Brown. The Ley Arms in Kenn near Exeter had a great night with local hero Jim Causley. Again a great night with Jim, a natural entertainer, who performed a number of songs off his latest CD which features poems by his distant relative, Charles Causley set to music by Jim. To top off a memorable run of gigs, the wonderful Young ‘Uns played ® Topsham Folk Club last week. So talented, so funny, so see them! So what’s on the horizon? Thursday 9th January will see another local talent, Steve Knightly, playing at the aforementioned Ley Arms. Details from 01392 210983. The following evening Friday 10th will see Steve’s musical partner from Show of Hands, Phil Beer performing a solo gig at Brixham Theatre supported by Maggie Duffy & Mike Weed. Phone 01803 882717 for details. Top-notch concertina player and singer ® Steve Turner will be performing at Folk on the Moor at The Westward Inn, Lee Mill near Plymouth on Sunday 26th January. Tickets available via www. moorfolk.co.uk Seth Lakeman will be gracing the hallowed Exeter Cathedral on Friday 7th February. Tickets I’m sure will be flying out of the box office at a rate of knots so get in quick! Details from 01392 667080. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a great Christmas and a happy, peaceful and music-filled 2014.
