Greetings. - so much good music flowing out from the shores of Cornwall recently! After the brilliant success of the ® Cornwall Folk Festival in Wadebridge during the Summer Bank holidays, we’ve since had the Lowender Peran Festival in Perranporth, maintaining its very high standards of harnessing all of what’s best in Celtic music, song and dance throughout the Region culminating in a highlight event celebrating the life and music of Brenda Wootton performed by an array of Cornish singers and musicians including the Camborne Town Band. It was fitting that Brenda’s family along with her grandchildren were there to celebrate the whole afternoon special concert. Our own ® Festival folk club (see ad previous page) booked its first ever guests in November with the very, wonderful Belinda O’Hooley & Heidi Tidow who arrived along with our audience on one stormridden Saturday night drenched by the rain, but once the girls started performing their two sets - they warmed up the audience by creating a warm, glowing ambient atmosphere which resembled some Parisianstyled café scene rather than a folk club – it was like slowly sipping and tasting a fine, matured malt whisky. Sheer magic! More folk events continue to pop up in and around Cornwall, some of which are listed below. The most recent highlight for me was : WALL CORN S SSION S & SE CLUB ®= Member, so see advert, news, listings SUN • Bude FALCON HOTEl ““ • Lanes DREAMERS FOLK CLUB Four ““ • Lostwithiel THE KINGS ARMS ““ [Devon] • Lee Mill ON THE MOOR’ club ‘FOLK MON • Bodmin MASONS ARMS TUE • Cadgwith CADGWITH INN ““ • Penzance INN, Alverton PIRATE ““ • Perranporth SEINERS BAR WED • Boscastle WELLINGTON ARMS HOTEL ““ • Penzance BEMBOW ADMIRAL ““ • Penzance BATH INN ““ • Philleigh INN ROSELAND ““ • Wadebridge PICTURE & COFFEE HOUSE THU • Falmouth THE GRAPES ““ • Trebarwith Strand MILLHOUSE INN FRI • Bodmin ® BODMIN FOLK CLUB ““ • Penzance BEMBOW ADMIRAL ““ • Penzance TURK’S HEAD SAT • Metherell CROSS HOUSE INN ““ • Issey St. RING O’BELLS ““ • Kew Highway ® FOLK FESTIVAL CLUB St. ““ • Stithians LION GOLDEN ““ • Looe FOLK CLUB West LOOE DEVON seeing and listening to the stories and music of Pete Berryman (photo, right) – one of the UK’s great unsung guitar heroes. This guy is not only one fine guitarist, but his travel tales are told in such a modest fashion about “ life on the road” recalling dramas similar to some Joseph Conrad novel! Just listen to his tales of life on the high seas and mountainous waves sailing across the southern hemisphere in some Greenpeace sailing vessel, or just driving across rough terrain in an old classic Rolls Royce with Diz Disley the renowned jazz guitarist, or by getting caught up in some dangerous despotic region of West Africa, then trekking to some really remote gig in a desert town in the Sahara just to play a gig - this is all “Bread n’ Butter” to Pete Berryman. His tales and music are worthy of being putting into script or catching up with on vinyl or film I reckon? Check him out if you get the chance – you won’t be disappointed! 2014’s going to be definitely one great year for the clubs and festivals with so many young bands and artistes emerging onto the scene now we are about to see a new folk boom rather like those heady days of the 60’s - so bring it all on and we’ll play our part down here!
