Spring 2014 News Ofsted to improve the academic rigours of Early Years Education in state schools in England Department of Education publishes reports about customer satisfaction and how complaints have been handled about schools Another Ofsted issue: a framework for inspecting non-association independent schools in England This gives the statutory basis for inspection and summarises the main features of school inspections carried out under section 162A of the Education Act 2002, as inserted by schedule 8 of the Education Act 2005. It sets out how the general principles and processes of inspection are applied to non-association independent schools in England. This framework should be read alongside the Non-association Independent School Inspection Handbook. This framework includes the inspection of provision for pupils aged three to five years in the Early Years Foundation Stage, taking account of the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. It does not cover the inspection of registered provision for the care of children from birth to age three, which is inspected under section 49(2) of the Childcare Act 2006. The framework comes into effect from 28 April 2014. Differences in degree outcomes This report looks at the outcomes of A-level students from England who entered full-time degree courses in 2007-08 and the extent to which a student’s background affects their chance of obtaining an upper second or first class degree. Level 2 and 3 attainment by young people aged 19 in 2013 (published 27th March 2014) Do we underestimate our youngest learners? Welcome Welcome to this term’s edition of Focus on Potential. Following feedback from our members, we have decided to digitise it so that you have your very own e-zine just like your children! This means that in future we can make it longer, put links in it to more articles and video-links. We could even combine it with our Chief Executive’s e-letter to send it to you on a monthly basis. Now there’s a thought! Let us know what you think; is it easy to access; is it the right length; do you want more? Of course, if you find it difficult to access, we will also provide a PDF for you to print yourself or just let us know and we will run off a copy and put it in the post to you. Anyway, we hope that you enjoy this edition! Rebecca Howell Senior Education Consultant Book Review The Growth Mindset pocketbook by Barry Hymer and Mike Gershon is finally out! This book provides a simple summary of all you need to know about growth mindset as an approach to create motivated children and young people who see failure as a learning opportunity and believe that putting effort into their work can ensure their intelligence is turned into success. We thought it was a very simple read and a good value publication. We recognise from parents that many of the children we support give up at the first signs of failure, are not motivated to learn or work hard, and coast along without putting in the effort. If this is your child, this book may be for you. Potential Plus UK Charity Registration No. 313182
