Recovering from
the Pinery fire
SOUTH Australians affected by the devastating
Pinery fire are the focus of recovery efforts led
by the Department for Communities and Social
Inclusion (DCSI).
The fire in the Mid North region in November
2015 burnt more than 82,000 hectares of land.
Tragically, two people were killed and 31 injured,
and 146 homes and 580 other structures were
destroyed or damaged.
As part of the immediate response to the
disaster, DCSI established and managed
24-hour emergency relief centres at Clare,
Balaklava and Gawler.
The department now operates the Pinery
Fire Recovery Centre, at Gawler. It offers
important information, advice and support
to help people recover and rebuild. This
includes emotional and health support as
well as information about insurance, animal
management and financial assistance.
The State Recovery Office, part of DCSI, is
providing overall coordination of the recovery
work that is being undertaken by government
agencies and non-government organisations.
More than $2.1 million, including $1 million
from the State Government, has been donated
to the SA Pinery Fire Appeal, with all proceeds
raised going to those affected. The appeal is
administered by the State Emergency Relief
Fund Committee, which is independent
to government.
Donations to the appeal will be accepted
until 30 June 2016, and people impacted
by the fire are encouraged to apply for funds.
