SHAW
Shaw has a
rich history as a hub for social,
cultural, and economic progress in the
nation’s capital. Today, this is arguably the
hottest neighborhood in D.C. As the birthplace of
Go-Go music and host to the Funk Parade each year,
the streets of Shaw have also seen Martin Luther King, Jr.,
Malcolm X, and many others in the fight to
achieve equality in this country. The history
of American entertainment finds its
roots in Shaw via places like Howard
Theater and Lincoln Theater and
was formerly known as “Black
Broadway”. Yet this residential
neighborhood, flush with 19th
century Victorian row houses,
has seen an immense amount
of change over the past few
years with developments that
have brought in Michelin Star-
rated restaurants and one of
the best cocktail bars in the
country. The rapid growth
of the area has resulted
in a distinctive, localized,
atmosphere differing from
other cookie-cutter areas
while preserving the strong
foundation Shaw was built
upon. Businesses seem to
be thriving, reflecting a lively
neighborhood that celebrates the
robust hospitality culture of D.C.
