Retirement was cruel for Doran. In the long decade since he returned the Caelum Ignotum safely to earth, his body had withered nearly as fast as his career. Now divorced, and banished to Shady Pines Retirement Community, the universe dealt Doran its final cruelty. Seated in a lumpy orange-brown recliner, he watched as a young, bronze Adonis announced that another ship had made the perilous journey. Irgendwo was, in fact, the second Eden astronomers had predicted. He watched as thousands of images of the ship’s crew were projected onto the giant common room screen. They stood next to alien fauna breathing alien air. Pundits and personalities sang their praises with glee and called for their immortalization in film, books, and stone.
