He ran outside and dove into the truck.

"Go! Go!" he shouted at himself as he scrambled behind the wheel. He dropped it into gear and sped onto the road. No one had seen him.

It was still raining, but the worst of the downpour had passed. Halfway back to the motel he spotted Kelsey. She was drenched. He rolled up next to her and opened the window.

"Hey," he said.

She kept moving as if he wasn't there.

"About the phone call," he said. "I'm sorry. It won't happen again."

She slowed.

"Come on," he said checking the mirror. "You're soaked. Come on. Get in." She stopped and looked at him.

"How do I know it won't happen again?" she said.

He shrugged. "I'll think of something."

Kelsey shook her head. "Why don't you just tell her not to call unless it's a real emergency. Period."

"Yeah," he said. "You're right. I will."

"I mean it," she said.

"I know you do."

Kelsey opened the door and climbed in. She was dripping.

The bag from the store was on the seat next to the gun. She looked inside.

"Wow," she said. "You did it without me."

"Pretty much."

"That's hot," she said. "I'm impressed. Looks like enough to cover the weekend. Maybe buy me a little present."

"It's my birthday not yours," said Bobby.

She smiled and undid her ponytail shaking out her wet hair before digging in her purse for a smoke.
