Editors' Preface

While reading through the entries for this edition of Flumes it quickly became apparent that we were most receptive to the pieces offering new perspectives in a clearly defined voice. The included perspectives and experiences range from deceptively unassuming to absolutely bizarre, but all provide unique insight from voices unfamiliar to us and most importantly: a good read.

As a journal based out of Northern California, we also noticed a natural gravitation toward pieces that evoke the awe-inspiring might and beauty of the ocean water. “Heart of the Sea” for example, contains a dialogue in the form of messages between someone searching for a place to belong and the ocean offering its cold embrace.

On the bizarre side, one particular entry we were proud to publish is “Mizuno.” The titular Mizuno has become the object of a young man’s affection, but the circumstances of their union puts his father in a unique position when he takes Mizuno on a bonding trip.

Our goal for this edition of Flumes is to take you, the reader, on a journey not unlike that of an ocean wave- an experience of highs and lows that reflect the reality of the human condition. You will ride the highs of quirky entries like “Falling for Harry” and experience the sobering lows of reality with entries like “The Butterfly Journey.”

Thank you for reading, we sincerely hope these pieces bring as much depth to your life as they have to ours.
