Rory
Space videos in the classroom have encouraged him to want to work in the NASA control room when he grows up . Until then , he thinks having an astronaut as a speaker at school would be cool . Outside of the classroom , Andrew has been to Kennedy Space Center twice and enjoyed seeing Atlantis .
Andrew admits math and reading are easy subjects for him . He loves to read and his favorite book is the third book in the Chronicles of Narnia series . Andrew also enjoys soccer and is a cub scout .
Rory used to love Pixar ’ s Finding Nemo , but has since graduated to National Geographic ’ s “ Monster Fish ,” a television show . He also likes the “ Star Wars ” movies .
Middle School Years
Similar to Rory , studying the environment is important to Xena , 13 , who attends school in Orange County .
Likewise , books grounded in a fantasy world intrigue Rory , 9 , who attends school in Alachua County . His favorite books include the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series .
Rory is interested in marine biology and wishes he could learn more about the subject in school . He enjoys learning about fish and science . On trips to the beach , he ’ ll swim and seek out the fish .
“ In third grade , [ the elements of science in nature ] became interesting because I love plants and animals and the way my teacher explained it to me [ helped me enjoy the subject ,]” she said . “ And when I learned about the environment and recycling , I wanted to go around and pick up trash .”
“ I used to go to the National Aquarium in Baltimore ,” said Rory . “…[ I liked ] the fish , shark tank , sting rays and swampy fish , too .”
To learn more about the environment , Xena would love to take a field trip to the forest to see plants and animals she hasn ’ t seen before . Or perhaps , see pictures of rarely seen creatures living deep in the ocean . A sense of discovery and exploration seems to help further her interest .
