Corridor Universities Rank High for
Research and Commercialization and Innovation
The three Corridor universities – the University of Central Florida ( UCF ), the University of South Florida ( USF ) and the University of Florida ( UF ) – are drawing attention as they surpass some of the world ’ s top research universities in bringing ideas out of the lab and into the marketplace .
The universities , which place an emphasis on commercializing their research , all ranked among the top 25 universities in the country for technology transfer , according to a 2017 report by the Milken Institute , a nonpartisan economic think tank . Among all research universities nationwide , UF ranked third , USF ranked 19th and UCF ranked 22nd , placing them alongside notable universities such as Stanford , Cal Tech , MIT and the University of Texas system .
The ranking is based on the institute ’ s University Technology Transfer and Commercial Index , which used four-year averages for four key indicators of success : patents issued , licenses issued , licensing income and startups formed .
In a similar report released by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association , the three universities individually ranked among the top 50 worldwide that were granted U . S . patents in 2016 .
The list , which is based on data from the U . S . Patent and Trademark Office , placed USF 11th , UF 18th and UCF 41st .
For the fifth year in a row , the three universities , combined , beat the patent portfolios of established university groups in North Carolina ’ s Research Triangle and the Silicon Hills region in Texas . Corridor universities received 261 patents . The Silicon Hills universities ( the University of Texas system , Rice University and Texas A & M University ) earned 234 and Research Triangle universities ( Duke University , North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina ) were granted 152 patents .
