From the
President
When university presidents stand in front of a crowd and proudly boast, “Our university is on the
move!” very few can compare their institutions’ rise to the prominence that the University of Central
Florida has achieved in just 50 years. As the nation’s second-largest university, UCF has grown in both
size and quality with a national reputation for student academic achievement, faculty research
accomplishments, and above all, successful community partnerships.
It is because of community partnerships that UCF is quite literally on the move, with the expansion of the
university in Downtown Orlando. Last year, UCF made the commitment to partner with state lawmakers,
the City of Orlando, Valencia College, Orange County Public Schools and others to build a robust
downtown campus of thriving programs, 21st century facilities and the potential to accommodate more
than 10,000 students. In addition to serving our students, UCF Downtown will engage corporate and
business partners to connect graduates to companies and spur economic development.
Perhaps the most exciting economic development project for UCF this year is the creation of the
Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center in Osceola County, which will house the world’s
first industry-led consortium for manufacturing of smart sensors and other emerging technologies.
What’s notable about this project is how well it exemplifies the partnership spirit of our Corridor. Both
the University of South Florida and University of Florida recognize the value this brings to our region,
and each has contributed $250,000 to fund the research endeavors of the Center.
