H ow serious are you about bringing the full package to the stage? STEP 2 Well if you are, here is The Posing Pro’s Emma Hyndman. Emma, the UK, British and world Toned Figure Champion and UK’s number one posing coach, has given FLEX readers a step by step, top 10 guide to ensure you’re ready to pose like the professionals in no time. Follow each step and learn the best way to present your hard-earned physique. STEP 1. Start by mastering the mandatory compulsory poses, it’s important to learn, just like in any skill, that you always start at the beginning. Start with the quarter turns as this is what you will present to the judges first, these are probably the most difficult poses to learn for the ladies but if you follow these steps I promise you that you will step on stage like a pro! STEP 2. Always set up your poses from the feet and work upwards through the pose, make sure you are activating the right muscles and presenting yourself to the judges. For example, in the ‘front relaxed’ pose place the feet together, rotate the heels inwards, rotate the quads outwards, tip the pelvis backwards, lift the midsection and pull the stomach into the spine, engage and flare the lats and pop the shoulders. STEP 3 If you go through this process every time you practice then eventually you won’t have to think about it. STEP 3. Feel and make the mind to muscle connection when you are in each stance. If you know how your muscle should feel when you are posing then it will be easier engaging and switching on each body part. A lot of people struggle to do this with the lats, so spend some time in your training session doing some light work and focus on activing STEP 4. Start to identify your strongest poses, acknowledge which ones work best for your figure. Be mindful that the judges are looking for that all important ‘X shape’ which actually applies to every category. For the figure classes, most females look great from the side and I always encourage clients to work the side poses as much as possible. STEP 5. Once you have learnt the compulsory poses you then need to start to piece it all together, we do this by adding transitions in between each pose, this is your opportunity to showcase yourself to the judges even more. Always be mindful that you should always be presenting when you’re on stage and STEP 3 STEP 4 118 and feeling the engagement of the muscle, I like to do this with single arm lat pull downs on the cable machine and putting my free hand onto my working muscle so I can FEEL when its engaging.
