SMOKE-FREE
ORDINANCE
EXPANDS
THE SABIT
PROGRAM COMES
TO LOUISVILLE
The Louisville Metro Council significantly expanded Louisville’s
smoke-free ordinance on Thursday, May 11 th to include electronic
cigarettes and hookah.
The Council’s 15-6 vote prohibits indoor smoking of e-cigarettes
and hookah in public places, a major victory for Mayor Greg
Fischer’s health agenda. There were a few small exceptions to
the measure including the allowance of e-cigarette customers to
sample products in stores and the exemption of hookah lounges in
operation since May 1 st if no food or alcoholic beverages are served.
Louisville health officials have pushed for this ordinance expan-
sion for some time, arguing that e-cigarettes and hookah both
contain toxic chemicals still not suitable for intake. Louisville
now has one of approximately 590 local and state prohibitions
on indoor use nationwide.
