Flavour-led Weaning: The Scoop | Page 7

FIRST SPICES AND HERBS FOR BABY

The sweet spices and herbs below are great to start with from 6 months+, after first tastes and mixed-ingredient purees have been accepted, (see

'The Flavour-led Weaning Flower' for guidance on page 5). These sweet, woody, floral flavours really lift the taste of purees. Cinnamon, vanilla, ginger and basil were particular favourites of my daughter, Aaliyah’s.

Black pepper

Chives

Coriander

Cumin

Dill

Garlic Powder

Mint

Oregano

Parsley

Rosemary

Turmeric

Some great first savoury flavours to try, which are also great from

6 months+, include:

Basil

Cardamom

Cinnamon

Cloves

Nutmeg

Ginger

Vanilla (not essence or extract)

Saffron

These all offer peppery, earthy, citrusy and smoky undertones, and are a great contrast to sweet herbs and spices.
