After his Congolese National Movement won the legislative elections of May 1960, Patrice Lumumba became the first prime minister of the Republic of Congo (DRC). Considered a radical leftist, his presence worries the Western powers and Belgium, from which the DRC gained independence on June 30 of the same year. Particularly critical of colonialism, the speech that Lumumba gave on the same day also upset the Belgian sovereign, Baudouin I. In July, a violent mutiny by Congolese soldiers against Belgian officers still on site caused instability which would quickly increase.
