Asking & Answering the Right Question
Victoria Calderone – Eminence Clear Skin
Probiotic Cleanser - I love this cleanser.
by Dr. Donna Brown, Health Coach
“Why?” is a simple
question, often asked
when a patient
confronts a health
problem or illness. But
'why' is seldom, if ever,
answered. And we have
become accustomed to
Dr. Brown
accepting that we will never
really know why illness occurs.
Sadly, for the most part we believe
that we can do very little, if anything, to
prevent illness and therefore our greatest
effort should be focused on early
detection and treatment. But is this
really the case? Is early detection the
best or only course of action? And can we
answer with some degree of certainty the
question of why disease or illness
occurred in the first place?
In a better world, I would love to see a
much bigger effort placed on the
prevention of illness and disease, not
merely early detection. And when disease
or illness is present, I would love to see
us work toward getting the patient's
health back and not settling for merely
managing or covering up the symptoms
through medication. What would
healthcare be like if a patient presented
with an illness and we actually worked
toward figuring out the “why?” –
determining where the imbalances are
and then worked to reverse them and
strengthen the patient? It would benefit
not only the patient, but would transform
health care itself. Health care would no
longer equate to “sickness care,” like it
currently does. Instead, doctors and their
patients would work together, actively
looking to figure out what has been
happening in the patient's body. Health
care would consist of addressing the
warning signs and the underlying
problems that led to the condition and
then looking to fixing the underlying
cause rather than relying on a pill as a
quick fix to mask the problem.
Sometimes it takes a great effort to
recover and be truly well again. But I
assure you it is worth it. Pills generally
lead to the taking of more pills as
sickness progresses unchecked.
Prevention is the far better road to
travel. This means realizing that we are,
for the most part, not just victims of
illness of which we had no part. We are
often the source of our own misery,

because what we eat indeed becomes
the living tissue that makes up our
entire body. The correct course – the
essential choice – is eating foods that
bathe our cells and our DNA with
nutrients designed to increase health
and not deplete it. We've been
brainwashed into a silver-bullet theory
of medicine, putting our faith in some
new miracle drug that will alleviate a
lifetime's worth of bad decisions,
“The person who takes
medicine must recover twice,
once from the disease and
once from the medicine.”
absolving us of taking responsibility for
our health. For example, many seem
to actually think that taking a statin
drug for high cholesterol is the way to
combat the formation of
atherosclerosis, yet they continue to
eat and drink anything they want while
watching TV on their couch. Could it
be that simple? I assure you it is not.
For every medication we take there
are side effects that actually further
remove us from the healthy balance
we should be seeking. As William Osler
put it, “The person who takes
medicine must recover twice, once
from the disease and once from the
medicine.”
