Blade Baits

C
old weather bass fishing is truly a
game of patience.
I learned the art of blade bait fishing from FLW
pro Scott Dobson and Great Lakes bass guru
Joe Balog on the big waters of Lake St. Clair,
Lake erie and the Detroit River; and I don’t
think I have learned any technique that has
produced more spectacular cold-water results.
Since then, I have wondered why more anglers
haven’t made blades their baits of choice for
cold weather bass.

Maybe it’s the name itself -- blade bait – that
turns us into swashbucklers the second we
put one on our line. “A blade was made to rip,”
we reason, and away we slash!
Now under the right conditions, ripping blades
catches fish. But for consistent catches in cold
weather, leave the errol Flynn act at home.
“Less is best!” preaches Dobson, who wields a
blade bait every bit as impressively as Flynn
flashed his saber on the silver screen.
