Fish Sniffer On Demand Digital Edition Issue 3911 May 2020 | Page 17

17 May 2020 VOL.39 • ISS. 11 What’s Hot continued from page 18 way down the Sacramento and into the McCloud arm. We started right at the Caverns on the east side of the McCloud. I trolled into Cavern Cove and suddenly there were marks all over the graph, right on the steep wall on the south side of the cove. The top line on my side suddenly lurched and the clicker on the Lexus started to sing! The silver blue Mag Lip 2.5 had done its job and enticed a trout! I landed a fat 18-inch rainbow for our first fish of the day. We trolled through the cove a couple times more, with no luck, so I turned out and headed to deep water in the middle of the McCloud. Again, we were seeing very few marks on the graph, an occasional one at 25 and 40 feet. I turned the Coastal back to the east, and just as we hit 200 feet of water, the downrigger rod on Bridget’s side popped. She had tweaked her back the day before, so she gingerly made her way to the rod and started playing the fish. The trout was coming to the boat without much of a fight, until it got within about 20 feet – and jumped! And it was a beauty! After the jump it sounded, taking line and going straight down. Bridget expertly worked the fish as it tore off drag a couple more times before tiring. She brought it close and I netted a fat 25-inch, 6.5-pound brown! We continued trolling toward the mouth of the McCloud, and caught 3 more fat rainbows to 19 inches. We originally planned to boat camp again, but Bridget’s back was hurting, so we called it a trip and headed home. A wonderful day featuring the second biggest trout I have ever landed at Lake Shasta!
