In an effort to protect public health and the safety of visitors, volunteers and staff as the state responds to the continued threat of COVID-19 (coronavirus), the California Department of Parks and Recreation (State Parks) and Department of Water Resources (DWR) have temporarily closed the Lake Oroville Visitor Center on Kelly Ridge Road. State Parks has also temporarily closed all campgrounds in the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area (LOSRA) to help slow the spread of the pandemic disease. The decision to close these areas are in accordance with guidance from the Governor’s Office via the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) in an effort to protect our most vulnerable community members. State Parks and DWR continue to monitor the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation closely and will follow any guidance provided by the Governor’s Office via the CDPH, the CDC, and Cal OES. RANCHO SECO RESERVOIR PYRAMID LAKE SUTCLIFFE - Pyramid Lake is one in a long list of closed lakes. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe passed a motion to close the lake to all activities including camping, day use, boating and fishing as of March 23. As of press time there was no projected date for the reservation to reopen to the public. “As the Chairman of the HERALD - This Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) reservoir, located near Herald, was still open to fishing and recreation from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at press time, according to Shane Oneto of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company. “Some of the bathrooms, including the swimming beach and boathouse bathroom, are closed. Tent camping has been cancelled, but the park is still open to RV camping and day use,” said Oneto. “The CDFW planted 400 pounds of catchable rainbows Friday and 1000 pounds of trophy rainbows from Mt. Lassen will be stocked in the lake near the end of the week. There is plenty of space out there on the lake so you can practice your social distancing,” said Oneto.
