Lighting Trout Before Closure efore Pardee Lake closed tempo- rarily to fishing and other recre- ation this March due to the coronavirus epidemic, Angler’s Press held its spring event at the popular Mother Lode reservoir on March 14. Anglers experienced top-notch trout fishing while enjoying off and off rain during the first significant storm of the 2020. Jay Xiong won first place in the adult division by catching a 3.46 lb. Lightning Trout shore fishing in the main recre- ation area while soaking chartreuse PowerBait. Xiong not only won first place in the adult division, but he also took big Lightning Trout honors during the event. Jay Huey of San Jose placed second in the adult division with his 2.7 lb. rainbow trout. The third through tenth place winners were (3) John Bender, 2.55; (4) Erin Baldanzi, 2.48; (5) Sabrina Ponder, 2.46; (6) Dan Quick, 2.42; (7) Dominick Sciarretta; 2.38; (8) Gary Bedford, 2.36; (9) John Zielinski, 2.34; and (10 Sargiz Eshaq, 2.31. Young anglers entered in the youth division also landed some quality rainbow trout. Joey Hill Jr. won first place with a 2.36 lb. rainbow trout. Joey was trolling with his father, Joey Hill Sr., when he hooked the trout. Aponi Taylor, who brought in an impressive limit of rainbows, placed second in the youth division with a 2.09 lb.. rainbow. The third through tenth place winners were (3) Peter Scali, 1.94; (4) Ricky Diaz, 1.86; (5) Jame Cox, 1.83 (6) Emma Filippone, 1.68; (7) Aliea Ybarra, 1.48; (8) Chad Milliron, 1.46; (9) Kameron Vette, 1.46; and (10) Sam Million, 1.44. One angler won $100 and a tackle box filled with Rooster Tail lures for catching a trout while using a Rooster Tail. Rainbow trout are the most popular species pursued at Pardee – and grow big and fat in the rich waters of the reservoir. Ronny Shelton of Ione set the lake rainbow record on June 14, 2002 when he landed an 18.65 lb. fish while bank fishing with Power Bait in the recreation area. Bank anglers and boaters reported top-notch trout fishing in the main recre- ation area of Lake Pardee on opening weekend 2020. The recreation area opened for camping on February 13 and for fishing on February at 5:00 a.m. after being closed for three months. The Rocky Mountain Recreation Company planted 10,000 pounds of rainbow trout prior to the opening weekend. Mt. Lassen Hatchery released 5000 pounds on February 13 and another 5000 pounds on February 14.
