and around trees and other structure
throughout the lake as the fish move into
the shallows. Anglers should use crappie
jigs and live minnows in Markley Cove,
Cappel Cove, Putah Creek and other
crappie hot spots.
Rainbow trout fishing continues to be
spotty, but the fish being caught include
quality rainbows in the 3 to 4 lb. range,
along with the planters. The fish are
scattered all over the lake from the dam
to Putah Creek at 25 to 30 feet deep.
Anglers are trolling with minnows, RMT
squid and Hum Dingers.
On March 20, the Bureau of
Reclamation suspended public
visitation to New Melones Lake and
Lake Berryessa visitor centers and
administrative offices. Outdoor recreation
opportunities including day-use areas,
campgrounds, and boat ramps remain
open at this time. Reclamation urges
visitors to follow Center for Disease

PORTOLA – The ice has been gone
from Lake Davis over the past few weeks,
but few anglers have been out fishing
during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Jim, my husband, drove the east side
of the lake this afternoon,” reported
Jeanne Graham of J&J’s Grizzly Store
and Camping Resort. “The road is plowed
to the turnaround area at Mallard Cove.
There is a foot or so of snow down the
access roads at both Mallard and Honker,
most likely more in the shady areas.”
“Folks were out fishing this past
weekend, but I do not have any reports,”
she added.
There are lots of trout in the lake for
anglers to catch at Davis. The California
Department of Fish and Wildlife stocked
11,000 pounds of rainbows, including
2,000 pounds of Eagle Lake trout, at
Davis last fall.
Lake Davis is holding 63,074 acre feet
of water, 76 percent of capacity and 100
