MONTEREY BAY cont. fishermen are bagging perch off the beaches and rocks. “We will be busy in the off season with annual maintenance on the Kahuna,” said Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing. “We are hoping for a LOT less wind this year!.” Chris’ Fishing Trips has been booking whale watching and sanddab/Dungeness crab adventures. The 19 anglers aboard the Checkmate returned with “lots of sanddabs” and 40 Dungeness crab on Saturday, February 15. The 15 anglers aboard the Checkmate checked in with “lots of sanddabs” and 45 Dungeness crab the previous day. The fishing has been good for the anglers fishing for sanddabs and crabs in 200-280 feet of water, according to Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz. There have been a few small halibut caught by trollers using bait and lures near Pajaro and Moss Landing. Fishing pressure has been light. “I only saw two boats go out fishing today,” said Fraser on February 15. “The perch fishing was good at 26th Avenue Beach and Manresa State Beach,” said Fraser. “The weather has been calm with small swells and afternoon winds.” Anglers are using an array of plastic grubs, Gulp! Baits, shrimp and pileworms for the surfperch. On their latest sanddab adventure, Stagnaro’s Fishing Trips reported 386 sanddabs for 10 anglers on a half-day adventure on Monterey Bay. - Dan Bacher getting ready for the salmon season on April 4 and the rockfish opener on April 1.
