REDDING/RED BLUFF
Sacramento Kicks Out Trout
To 24 Inches
REDDING - Flows on the Sacramento
below Keswick Dam are steady at 5,000
CFS and the trout fishing has been
excellent for both fly and conventional
gear anglers.
Fly guys have been scoring well during
the midday hours when various species of
mayflies become active. The best stretch
for fly fishing has been from Bonnyview
to Anderson, the action on the upper end
has been slower.
There are still a few spawning king
salmon in the river. When you stumble on
a pair of salmon, it’s time to break out the
egg imitations and work they area below
them. Both large rainbows and steelhead
are being hooked using this approach.
Gear guys are back trolling a variety of
small crankbaits and side drifting with both
glo bugs and cured roe.
The average rainbow being caught
these days runs 12 to 16 inches, but 20
inchers show up on almost every trip.
A good day on the water at this time
whether you fish with fly or conventional
gear, produces around 25 hook ups.
If you’d like to battle some wild rainbows
in the Redding area with conventional
gear, give Robert Weese of Northern
California Guide Service or Mike Bogue of
Mike Bogue’s Guide Service a call. They
are two of the most experienced guides
on the river and will work hard to get you
fish. To contact Weese, call (530) 755-

40 and 25 Lb. Stripers Caught

RIO VISTA – Alan Fong, manager of the
Fishermen’s Warehouse in Sacramento,
continues to experience success on big
stripers while fishing very shallow water –
2 feet of water – in the Liberty Island area
of the North Delta.
On his latest venture to Liberty Island,
he caught and released two striped bass
weighing 40 and 25 pounds while fishing
glide baits at Liberty Island.
“The stripers were chasing Sacramento
pike-minnows,” said Fong. “We were
fishing Sneaky Petes and S Wavers. The

Bass & Trout Fishing Very
Good
COLFAX - Rollins Lake is fishing
better than it has in a long time with both
spotted bass and rainbow trout offering
excitement.
“What a difference a trout plant makes,”
exclaimed Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista.
“The trout fishing has been really good at
Rollins. The fish have spread out and are
on the feed. The pond smelt population at
Rollins is strong, so the lake’s bass and
trout have plenty of feed.”
“I’ve hit the lake 3 times over the
past 10 days with my kayak and I’ve
caught multiple trout on every trip. I’ve
gotten quite a few on chrome and blue
Cripplures, but the best offering has been
a threaded Gulp! Minnow pulled behind
a set of Mack’s Lure Flash Lite Flashers.
The flashers pull the trout out expecting to
see a small pod of smelt and they have a
hard time not hitting that Gulp! Minnow,”
Pleece asserted.

that day. In addition to the big fish, we
also landed fish in the 5 to 8 pound range.
The water temperature was 48 degrees.”
“After the tide changed and we could no
longer fish for stripers, we went fishing for
largemouth bass,” he noted. “We caught
and released 17 largemouths in the 1-1/2
to 4 lb. range in 2 to 4 feet of water.”
Fong noted that a friend was spooled by
a big striper during a recent trip to Liberty
Island.
The Santa Clara Shoals area of the
North Delta is also producing striped bass
for boaters trolling with shallow-running
Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Rat-L-Traps,
Fong advised.
Roger Mammon, President of the
California Striped Bass Association
(CSBA), West Delta Chapter, reported
catching and releasing four stripers in
the 18 to 21 inch range while tossing
out swimbaits on the west bank of the
Sacramento River in three hours of solo
fishing.
