Charter Boats Pursue Rockfish When
Weather Cooperates

MOSS LANDING – The anglers who made it out on
the days when the ocean was fishable found decent
rockfish action along the Monterey County coast as
the season nears its end on December 31. Winter
storms – and the accompanying big swell – have
kept the boats in the harbor many days over the past
couple of weeks.
The latest trip by the Kahuna produced 170 rockfish
for 24 anglers, reported Carol Jones of Kahuna
Sportfishing. The previous trip aboard the boat
yielded 12 lingcod and 230 rockfish for 23 fishermen.
The five anglers getting out on the Caroline, out
of Chris’ Fishing Trips in Monterey, on Sunday,
December 16 landed 1 lingcod, 17 rockfish and 25
Dungeness crab. The previous adventure aboard the
Caroline yielded 1 lingcod, 80 rockfish, 21 Dungeness
crab and 1 spider crab for 13 anglers.
“There were a few boaters who went out and caught
some lingcod and rockfish near South Rock before
the wind came up,” reported Todd Fraser of Bayside
Marine in Santa Cruz. “The crab fishing is still
decent in 200-250 feet of water straight out.
The surfperch have been biting the Gulp!
Sand Worms well.”
Boat-based rockfish and lingcod
fishing will close on December 31,
so there isn’t much time left to go
rockfishing this year.

November.
