20 Oct 25 - Nov 8, 2019 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 19 LOS VAQUEROS RESERVOIR Autumn Trout Plants Start LIVERMORE – Fall trout plants have started, boosting the fishing success at Los Vaqueros Reservoir. “One thousand pounds of Mt. Lassen trout were planted on October 3,” according to the Los Vaqueros Marina. “Shore anglers have the most success using garlic scented PowerBait followed by night crawlers. Trolling is doing fairly well especially in the backs of coves. On days the winds allow, anglers fishing from rental boats have seen a number of limits as well as anglers with just a couple.” Striper fishing is decent as well. “A couple of guys landed limits of stripers in the 20 to 24 inch range while tossing out anchovies and nightcrawlers in Howden Cove this week,” said Kyle Schults at the marina. “One couple also each caught a legal-sized striper while bait fishing in south cove.” James Sampson caught a 4.3 lb striper in the middle of the lake on an anchovy during the first weekend in October. If you want to hook catfish, try tossing out anchovies and chicken liver in the South Cove, Cowboy Cove and Oak Point. The latest plant of 1000 pounds of channel catfish went into the lake on August 27. Los Vaqueros is holding 145,438 acre feet of water, 91 percent of capacity. The surface water temperature ranges from 68 to 70 degrees. FRESHWATER 31. There is still room in the contest for additional sign-ups. Big fish honors go to John Wilson of Angels Camp, who brought in 8.5-pound catfish in from a depth of 15 ft. while fishing off shore. “With the fall bass bite ready to break loose on Melones, look for bass targeting schools of shad, on lake points. Use Senkos, jigs, and plastics on the fall. Break out the crankbaits and swimbaits in the evenings,” said Hildebrand. New Melones Reservoir’s current lake level is 1055.25 feet in elevation and 31.75 ft. from full. The water level has remained in the 1055- foot elevation for the last 21 days and is holding steady. The water temperature is 70 degrees. Water clarity is improving with the cooler weather and dropping water temperatures.
