were 5 pounds or over. There are a lot of
4.5 to 5 lb. stripers showing in the river
now.”
The anglers found the top fishing while
trolling both deep diving and shallow
diving Yo-Zuris in clown, crawdad and
bleeding shad color patterns.
Another solid prospect in the North Delta
is targeting smallmouth bass with top
water lures, crawdad crankbaits, jigs and
plastic worms in Miner, Steamboat and
Elk sloughs and the Sacramento River.
The fishing is best early and late in the
day along the riprapped banks and other
structure.

ROLLINS/SCOTTS FLAT
Variety Is The Word For
Foothill Anglers
COLFAX - The fall trout bite has yet
to kick in at Rollins Lake, but anglers
should see an uptick in the action once
nighttime temperatures start to get chilly.
These days bass continue to provide the
best sport at the lake, but knowledgeable
anglers have been catching some panfish
too.
“My buddy JJ and I hit Rollins this week
from out kayaks. We knew we weren’t
likely to catch trout, but we were hoping
to catch both bass and bluegill. We took
a bunch of bass gear with us, along with
some crickets, wax worms and crappie
jigs,” related Jason Pleece of Meadow
Vista.
“We tried both the Bear and Greenhorn
Arms. The wax worms and crickets got
a lot of attention from bluegill in the
Greenhorn Arm. We fished them under
small bobbers. 6 feet deep was the magic
depth. We got fish on both wood and rock
structure. We got over 20 panfish. The
average fish was a palm size bluegill,
but we did pick up one crappie that was
just over 9 inches long. We kept a dozen
panfish for dinner and then headed over
to the Bear Arm for some bass action,”
said Pleece.
“The bass fishing has improved a little.
We ended up with 7 spotted bass to 13
inches. Topwater poppers and small
crankbaits worked the best. If we would
have used small Senkos and worms we
probably would have gotten more fish,
but we want to stick with reaction baits,”
Pleece concluded.
At Scotts Flat, bass and catfish are the
main attraction. The bass will hit topwater
plugs early in the morning and during the
evening too, but the morning is the best
time. During the day, you’ll want to drag
soft plastics.
For cats soak worms, liver and other
traditional whiskerfish baits near the
campground during the evening.

SACRAMENTO – Chinook fishing at the
mouth of the Feather River at Verona is
by no means hot, but it’s still better than
the action is at Discovery Park and Miller
Park.
“There are a couple of guys that are
picking up a salmon about every other trip
out of Verona,” said Uncle Larry Barnes at
Sacramento Pro Tackle. “They are trolling
and anchor fishing with chrome Kwikfish
and Flatfish to catch their fish.”
“Salmon fishing is dead at Discovery
Park and Miller Park,” he added. “One
angler did hook an 18 lb. salmon at
the Minnow Hole
while throwing out
a Mepps Flying C
spinner.”

“Channel catfish are biting chicken liver,
anchovies and worms in various places,”
said Marcella Shoemaker at the Rocky

catfish bite seems to be active across

The crappie are also biting; try hanging
