24 FRESHWATER August 16-30, 2019 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 23 WEST DELTA cont. Power Lines, but you have to sort through lots of shakers for a keeper or two. The occasional keeper sturgeon is being pulled out of the deep water below Pittsburg, but fishing pressure is very light. The top baits continue to be roe and eel. The biggest challenge for sturgeon anglers has been dealing with the wind. WESTERN NEVADA Truckee River and Lahontan Are Best Bets RENO - If your preferred flavor is cold or warm water fishing, the Western Great Basin currently has a lot to offer. The Truckee River from the Nevada/California state line down to about Painted Rock is fishing well for trout. Big rainbows and browns in the 20-23” range are falling to fly fishers and spinning rod anglers alike. The fly crowd is getting the bulk of their fish while nymphing with indicators and tippets with a fair amount of split shot. Stonefly and caddis patterns are a good bet as are generic nymphs like Prince Nymphs and Hare’s Ear’s. Meanwhile, spinning rod enthusiasts are catching planters with garden hackle (night crawlers), salmon eggs and PowerBait, with night crawlers being the best option of the aforementioned bunch. Worms work best with just enough split shot to consistently tick the bottom. Trophy hunters upsize their tackle and drift live crawdads or throw Rapala minnows right at dawn or dusk. While trout are biting in the rivers, the warm water bite is very good at several Western Nevada Reservoirs. Walleye, wipers, channel and bullhead catfish, crappie, smallmouth bass and the ubiquitous carp are all thrilling anglers at Lahontan and Rye Patch Reservoirs. A beautiful thing about both of these lakes, is that a wad of night crawlers on the bottom will consistently catch just about anything that swims. The pesky 4-6” white bass that are everywhere in Lahontan can get down- right annoying Young Chandler caught several bass while fishing a tube at Folsom Lake as they have with Don Paganelli on July 16 including this hefty largemouth. a habit of Photo courtesy of PAGANELLI’S BASS FISHING EXPERIENCE, Sacramento. stealing bait without getting hooked.
