zero problem finding your lures as long as
you are working the correct depth range.
You can find good action almost
anywhere in the lake, but you’ll probably
find the most consistent action while
focusing on the main body and lower ends
of the arms.
Trouters can count on good fishing
from this point forward until dropping
temperatures destroy the thermocline and
scatter the fish.
Bass anglers are working the surface
early and late with solid results. When the
sun hits the water standard soft plastic
tactics are the way to go.
The average bass is a 12-inch spot,
but spots to 4 and largemouths to 7 have
shown over the past two weeks.
At Whiskeytown, the average
kokanee goes about 16 inches and fish
approaching 20 have been reported. The
299 bridge and cold water curtain have
both been producing salmon for anglers
trolling spinners, hoochies and Apex Lures
behind 4 inch dodgers. Pink and orange
have been hot morning colors. Greens
work well in the afternoon.
This bite is going to start slowing down
in the coming weeks as the fish prepare
to spawn. Some of the fish are already
sporting slightly hooked jaws indicating
that spawning activity will start developing
before long.

Shaun McVie of Sacramento and his
girlfriend Stacy recently took a kayaking
trip to Tahoe and caught both mackinaw
and kokanee while jigging.
“We fished offshore of Taylor Creek.
We located some balls of kokanee and
dropped small P-Line Laser Minnows
down about 70 feet hoping there were
some big macks feeding on the kokanee.
We ended up landing 3 macks to about 4
pounds, but we also got 3 kokanee that
measured about 12 inches. We’ve fished
Tahoe a number of times, but this was by
far our most productive trip,” exclaimed
McVie.
WEST DELTA
Catfish, Smallmouths &
Stripers Provide Thrills
BRANNAN ISLAND - In the West Delta,
catfish are on a very good bite and black
bass are hitting well too. For persistent
anglers both stripers and sturgeon are
available, but you’ll have to put in some
time.
For catfish, anglers are relying on
standard offerings like liver, worms, clams,
mackerel and cut anchovies in 8 to 25
feet of water. If you go you’ll want to focus
on areas that feature current. The most
consistent action is taking place early,
late and after dark, but you can also catch
them in the daylight hours too.
Smallmouth bass are active in the
sloughs above Rio Vista. To hook up,
anglers are tossing surface poppers,
Senkos and crawfish pattern crankbaits.
The average bass measures about 14
inches, but fish to 3 pounds can be found.
Striper trollers are hooking up at the top
and bottoms of the tides, but overall, it’s
been slow.
