SACRAMENTO AREA
Local Anglers Concentrate on
Catfish
SACRAMENTO – Until the salmon
fishing picks up on the Sacramento
River in the metropolitan area, anglers
can expect to find the top fishing while
targeting catfish in the river and local
sloughs.
“A shot of salmon went through the
mouth of the American at Discovery
Park last Sunday, but the fishing slowed
down after that,” said Dennis Pfanner at
Sacramento Pro Tackle. “The few anglers
who did catch salmon caught while trolling
spinners and Flatfish from boats. I haven’t
heard of any fish caught from the bank at
the mouth yet.”
“I would expect the fishing to turn on until
late September when the American River
fall Chinooks arrive in big numbers,” said
Pfanner.
For channel catfish, Pfanner suggested
fishing the Sutter Bypass with mackerel,
chicken liver and anchovies. Other spots
worth trying include the Port of Sacramento,
Sacramento Deepwater Shipping Channel
and Lisbon Slough.
For crappie, he recommended fishing
jigs or minnows under a bobber around the
pumping stations in the Sutter and Yolo
Bypasses.
