WHAT’S HOT
Bullards Bar
is one of
California’s
premier kokanee
fisheries. You’re
not going to
catch big salmon
at the lake, but
boating big
numbers isn’t a
problem.

angler and it did not take long for him
to dial in the bite. Within five minutes
of setting the lines in the water, the first
rod went off. Dan grabbed the rod from
its rod holder and with a jerk, popped
the line free of the down rigger. After a
spirited tussle, Captain Les scooped up
the fat 13 inch kokanee.
It was my turn next or so I thought as

a strike. I popped the line free of the down
rigger and the fish surged to the surface
and then it was gone. I reeled up my gear
to find my corn missing. After re-tipping
my lure, I was back in business. As soon
as I put my rod back in the holder, I had a
fish on. I popped the fish free of the down
rigger and the fight was on. I carefully
reeled the shiny silver bullet to the side of
the boat. where Captain Les was there with
the net and in a flash the fish was on ice.
The magic depth trolling depth for
the day was between 30 and 40 feet and
Captain Les kept the boat moving a slow
1 to 1.3 mph. At times it felt as if were not
even moving.
Over the next several hours, the action
continued at a steady pace and before we
knew it, we had filled out our limits. “The
kokanee at Bullards are strong, fat and
healthy,” said Captain Les. “We are seeing
lots of fish in the 13 to 14 inch range. This
was unheard of just a few years ago.”
As we neared the end of our morning,
Captain Les received a call from Captain
Jeff aboard the Samantha Irene. He was
already back at the dock in Bodega Bay
with full limits of salmon for the boat.
So whether you prefer kokanee or ocean
salmon, Fish On Charters has the trip
for you. You can contact Captain Les at
