he marlin fishing is just up and down
over last week, with lots of marlin at the
beginning of the week,” reported Captain Jerry
Chapman of JC Sportfishing. “The marlin
are moving offshore 20 miles from the Light
House to the 190 degrees out and past the 95
spot looking for warmer water it seems. As the
bait moves south so does all the good fishing.
Over last 2 days San Jamie and the Los Arcos
areas on the Pacific have been really good using
mackerel and lures. There are lots
of marlin and even sailfish are still
in the area. If you pitch bait or
troll lures you might have a better
chance of landing a nice fish.”
“It has been off and on for dorado
lately but we have been landing
some really good fish. The Light
House to Rancho Migrino on the
Pacific side has been good using
lures, ballyhoo and live bait with
some of the dorado going from
25lbs to 35lbs. One day we had 6
dorado, then we had a day of just
1 fish and then it really kicked in
and we got 9 fish. So, who the heck
really knows? This is great news
and we think they are here to stay
awhile now as it seems the water
temperature is suitable for them
now,” related Chapman.
“Inshore good numbers of roosterfish ranging in
size from 12lbs to 35lbs are being caught tight to
the beach. We really don’t know why the roosters
are here now as they normally show up in July
and summer months. The pangas have been doing
really well inshore for dorado and even the wahoo
fishing has been good tight to the beach. The
productive areas are from the Solmar all the way to
the Pump House,” Chapman concluded.

T
he fishing season should be winding down
along the East Cape, but no one has told
the fish because the bite keeps on rolling forward
according to the staff at the Hotel Buena Vista
Tuna are showing up for anglers drifting with
both live and chunked baits. Many of the yellowfin
are footballs, but bigger fish to 60 plus pounds
can be had. Once your bait is in the water, the size
of the tuna that come knocking is a function of
chance.
There are still dorado showing up and some of
them have topped 40 pounds. Live bait is king for
the dorado, but some fish are being caught by trollers
pulling hoochies and flies.
Trollers are encountering solid marlin action along
with some bonus wahoo. On lucky lady angler landed
and released a handsome sailfish in recent days.
Overall fishing pressure has been light and the
weather has been very good. If you’d like to get away
from the hustle and bustle of
the holiday season with a few
days of fun in the sun, a trip
to the East Cape will certainly
fill the bill!
