“ We ’ ve been getting early limits all week long on big quality fish . I ’ ve been sticking to the basics . We are hooking our fish on T-55 Flatfish with a sardine wrap . I ’ m fishing the stretch from Redding to Red Bluff ,” said Bogue .
Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service is also reporting great action on the Sacramento .
Weese starts out the day pulling plugs . If his clients don ’ t get their limits early , Weese breaks out the salmon roe and finishes up drifting eggs . Most of the fish Weese ’ s clients are landing run 15 to 25 pounds , but much larger fish into the 30 are popping up .
While salmon are the focus on the Sacramento , the trout action has been outstanding for anglers working crickets , egg imitations and nymphs . The wild rainbows range from 12 to 20 inches .

Anglers Wrangle Salmon And Stripers
Rio Vista- “ I dumped the boat at Brannon and my brother Ed and I motored up the Sacramento to Rio Vista and dropped our salmon spinners into the water and started trolling up river ,” related Josh Benson , an Oakland based Fish Sniffer reader .

“ We ’ d only had the gear in the water for a couple minutes when my rod bent hard . It wasn ’ t shaking so I figured it was snagged . When I pulled it out of the rod holder I felt some headshakes and told my brother to put the motor in neutral . The fish was a 22 pound chrome bright king . I was super excited . It was my first Delta salmon ,” Benson exclaimed .
“ About 20 minutes later Ed hooked a hot fish and lost it almost immediately . Just as soon as he got his spinner back down he had another fish on . It turned out to be a 12 pounder that was stuffed with roe . It looks like we ’ ll have some good bait for sturgeon fishing ,” said Benson .
According to the staff at Hap ’ s Bait , salmon trolling above Rio Vista has been hot for anglers pulling spinners along the bottom . Some fish have been coming on Flatfish and Brad ’ s Killer Bait Cut Plugs too . Most of the kings are 15 to 25 pounds , but there are much larger fish in the system .
For stripers , most guys are pulling Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows in both deep

and shallow running models . At this point stripers are being caught both above and below Rio Vista . Anglers that put in the time are getting limits most days . The average bass runs 4 to 8 pounds , but there are plenty of double digit fish in the mix .

With No Trout Plants , Bass Are The Main Attraction
COLFAX - Rollins Lake is in transition and the fishing has been slow for everything but small spotted bass and smallmouths .
“ Another month has gone by without a trout plant at Rollins Lake ,” reported Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista . “ You can feel fall in the air , so during my last trip to Rollins I spent some time targeting the lake ’ s resident brown trout . I pulled small Rapalas and a variety of different spoons in the Bear River Arm , but didn ’ t get so much as a tap . On the way back in I worked some submerged wood with small vibrating crankbaits and caught 4 spots and smallmouths . All of them under 12 inches .
“ I think it ’ s going to take some rain or a cold snap to get the trout bite going and even then , I ’ m not sure how good the action will be . There is a decent population of wild browns in the lake , but the number of rainbows has to be pretty low since there wasn ’ t much planting going on this year ,” Pleece added .
The story at Scotts Flat is much the same , according to Duane Miles of Auburn .
“ I hit Scotts last week and spent 3 hours trolling for trout . I landed one 11 inch smallmouth and that was it ,” said Miles .

Salmon Fishing Perks Up In Metro Region
SACRAMENTO – Salmon fishing has improved in the Sacramento River from above Discovery Park to Freeport as the fall run of Chinooks makes its way upriver to spawn .
“ The fishing has been really good ,” said Uncle Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle . “ You can catch fish on spinners from the bank or while trolling or jigging from a boat . About 50 percent of the anglers might catch their 1 fish limits .”
Schoolie stripers are also rewarding anglers fishing in the Port of Sacramento from the boat locks to the farmhouse .
“ Boaters trolling with Yo-Zuri and other lures or jigging with Blade Runner spoons are hooking fish ,” said Barnes . “ The occasional bank guy is also catching an occasional fish . The fish average about 3 pounds each .”
“ If you land 15 fish , you can expect around one or two to be shakers ,” he noted . “ That ’ s pretty good fishing .”
Alan Fong at Fisherman ’ s Warehouse reported catching a 7 lb . salmon while jigging with one of his homemade spoons during his latest trip on the river at Miller Park .
“ Anglers on the anchor are hooking salmon on Silvertron spinners ,” said Fong . “ If you have a two rod stamp , I suggest fishing one of the spinners off the bottom . On your other rod , let out a Silvertron spinner behind the boat to hook the suspended fish . Anglers are graphing the salmon at 10 to 12 feet deep .”

Bait Dunkers Reel In Channel Cats
EL SOBRANTE – Anglers haven ’ t reported any huge channel catfish lately like the 28 lb . monster landed by Lindomar Da Silva of San Pablo a couple of weeks ago , but anglers are still hooking good numbers of good-sized catfish .
