FRESHWATER REPORTS:
CONTINUED FROM PG 13
COLUSA/KNIGHTS LANDING
cont.
Wayne Oliver, reported catching their two
fish salmon limits while anchor fishing on
the Sacramento with Half Fast tidewater
spinners,” said Pat Kittle at Kittle’s
Outdoors. “Other fishermen have also
reported catching some chinooks in the
Colusa area.”
The catfish action remains excellent
in the Knights Landing area of the
Sacramento. For example, three
members of the James family recently
landed 22 catfish to 9 pounds and one
20 inch striper while soaking chicken
liver and mackerel from the bank during
a recent venture to First Beach, reported
Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoors in Rio
Linda.
EAST DELTA
Stripers Blow Into San
Joaquin River
STOCKTON - The San Joaquin Delta
has been loaded with striped bass,
and the largemouth bass bite has also
improved with more and more of the larger
variety taken by experienced fishermen.
Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor,
has been targeting striped bass with
the ima Little Stick as well as the larger
Big Stick, and he has found spectacular
action. Pringle said, “The regular Little
Stick hooks are designed for largemouth
bass, but ima has come out with a
saltwater version in sardine, and we just
destroyed the stripers this week with over
50 linesides to 8 pounds. There were so
many stripers on topwater that we didn’t
even go to spooning as the fish were on
the sand bars.”
“I couldn’t find any birds so we pulled up
to an area that I have fished before, and I
saw a swirl on the surface. We started fan

casting, and we didn’t put
down our rods for some
time. The Optimum Bad
Bubba Shad swimbait
with a chartreuse tail is
working in dinghy water
while the platinum is
the best color pattern in
clear water. The Delta is
getting clear, but there
are still some areas of
dirty water,” he tipped.
“For largemouth bass,
I switch over to the
1-ounce Roadrunner with
a curly tail in dirty water
and knock it around
on structure. The Little
Stick in Toucan or Sexy
Minnow is also effective
for largemouth bass,”
Pringle revealed.
Dan Mathisen of Dan’s
Delta Outdoors in Oakley
reported good striper
fishing with a variety of
lures including topwater
and Optimum’s Bad
Bubba Shad. He said,

RESERVOIR

Stripers, Catfish Top Early Fall
Catches
BYRON – Although striped bass
and channel catfish offer anglers the
best chance of angling success at Los
Vaqueros Reservoir at this time, the lake
received its first trout plant of the fall when
Mount Lassen stocked 2,000 pounds of
rainbows in the lake the week of October
1.
Successful anglers include JP Path
from San Jose, who caught and released
a 16 lb. striped bass in September. He
was using an anchovy on the fishing dock
when he caught the whopper. Yekam El
Nakar also caught a 30 inch striper on
anchovy in the South Cove.
Gou Yang had a great day when he
landed four hefty catfish and one striper
while soaking anchovies.
The most recent catfish plant was on
August 30 when a 2,000-pound plant from
Tsai Enterprise went into the reservoir.
“The stripers are boiling on bait in the
evenings near the marina,” said Mark
Goodal of the Los Vaqueros Lake Marina.
Anglers are hooking the stripers while
tossing out shad, anchovies and chicken
liver in the South Cover, near the marina
and in Howden Cove.
On Saturday, October 20th, CCWD
will host its annual Catch A Special Thrill
(C.A.S.T.) event at the Los Vaqueros
Marina.
It’s a #FREE fishing event that pairs
students with special needs and their
families with local volunteer fishing
experts for a day of boat or shore-fishing,
a BBQ, awards, and #freebies like a
fishing pole and other goodies for the
students!
