“ The fishing was good today and it ’ s been really good for the past 3 weeks or so . We have a slow day now and then , but even on the slow days we are getting some good fish ,” said Weese .

“ We ended up with 4 fish today between 18 and 22 pounds while fishing near Red Bluff . One fish came on a Flatfish early and then we went with roe and light gear for the last 3 . For me the best action has been between Red Bluff and Hamilton City .”

Bogue has been getting most of his fish on plugs up in the Redding area .

“ I ’ ve been running wrapped Flatfish mainly ,” said Bogue . “ I ’ ve been doing some trout fishing in addition to the salmon fishing . The trout action has been good . I ’ m running the Yakima Mag Lip 2.5 ’ s and the rainbows are smacking them .”

Weese has also been running the occasional trout trip with good results .

“ It might just be me ,” Weese said , “ but I think the river is fishing better for trout this year than it did last year . That big outflow the winter before last changed some of my spots and they are just now getting back to normal .”

Bass Bite Kicks Back into Gear

COLFAX - Trout will be available at Rollins and Scotts Flat Lakes once water temperatures come down . Until then the best option is targeting bass . The bass bite has been good for anglers tossing a variety of lures including topwater baits .

Anglers Waiting for More Salmon

SACRAMENTO – You can expect the salmon fishing to pick up as the American River fall Chinook run begins moving upriver by mid-September . Right now , the fishing continues to be slow exception for an occasional good day of fishing .

“ A school of salmon moved through the area last week for a couple of days ,” said Uncle Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle . “ Anglers caught some quality fish while trolling and jigging from Miller Park to the mouth of the American . However , the fishing has slowed down since then .”

Local anglers have been catching surprisingly big largemouth bass out of the local ditches and drainage canals off West El Camino Avenue between Interstate Five and Interstate 80 . “ One guy reported catching an 8 pounder in one of the local sloughs ,” said Barnes .

Anglers fishing in the evenings are bagging some catfish up to 13 pounds ,

Crappie continue to hit crappie jigs and small swimbaits . “ For the big ones , try Scow Canyon around the reeds and various covers ,” Shoemaker tipped . The lake level is currently 303.9 feet above sea level and the surface temperature is 72.0 degrees . Trout plants won ’ t resume until the water temperatures cools down below 70 degrees .

SHADOW CLIFFS / QUARRY LAKES

Big Cats Draw Anglers

PLEASANTON – Channel catfish are drawing the most consistent attention from anglers venturing to Shadow Cliffs Lake now .

“ Guillermo caught a three pound catfish , fishing right of the boat rentals with livers ,” reported Edward Culver of the East Bay Regional Park District . “ Sam of Pleasanton landed his limit of catfish while bait fishing from his boat . The largest catfish was 12 pounds .”

“ Rodney Kuzuke caught two catfish totaling 13.13 lbs . while using anchovies for bait ,” Culver stated .

The biggest fish landed at the reservoir over the past month was a 21-pound channel catfish reeled in by an angler using a float tube in the main lake .

Anglers continue to hook and release largemouth bass in the Arroyo Ponds . G . Rezendez caught and released six bass while using Senkos from his float tube in the arroyo .

Remember that the regulations for the Arroyo Ponds require both an EBRPD daily fishing permit and CA state fishing license The fishing is restricted to catch and release , barbless hooks , artificial lures , and float tubes only .

Fishing pressure has been very light at Quarry Lakes lately , with no catches reported to the kiosk
